I was afraid that Key West on memorial weekend was going to be a problem, but come on now!! And to make matters worse, this place – the whole chain of keys- is nothing more than a 111 mile shopping mall, no make that a strip mall. Geez, where did all these people come from? And the speed limit is maxed at 55, but in most places is 45. And for the first half of the keys, there are more cops than tourists! I’m NEVER coming here again unless we fly. If I wouldn’t have been on a mission, I’d have turned around and said forget it. The only thing that made it worth coming here for was the key lime pie.
Got started later than I would have liked (6:30) and despite some problems, still put on over 500 miles. As soon as I got on the turnpike, there was an accident that shut things down for over half an hour. After life flight took off, it was still about 10 minutes before we got rolling. Looked like rain all day so I put on my rain gear, and it didn’t rain, so I took it off when I got hot. Then it looked like it was going to rain again, so I did the same thing – on again, off again. And turnpike commission must have just hired some illegal aliens to work the toll booths, because they know NOTHING. After you pay the toll from the ticket, you then pay as you go. One dollar at each booth. At every booth, I asked the person working how many more there were on the way to Key West. Each person said there was one more. 5 times this happened!!!
My accommodations are different than anything I have ever experienced. Last night as I was surfing the web and thinking about booking something online, I saw so many rooms available, I thought I’d just wing it and get something when I get here. WRONG!!!!!!! Nothing available, but when I stopped at a Comfort Inn, the guy behind the desk made a call and I wound up with a room at Eden House. This is kind of an old Key West hotel off a side street circa 1930’s. It’s one room, you have to walk down the hall to use the bathroom or shower, but it’s clean and quiet. As I type this, I’m out on the back veranda, listening to the waves hitting the beach and the palm trees rustling in the wind. If it wasn’t for the walking down the hall thing, Louise might even like this. Too bad we’ll never be here again.
Tomorrow I’m off to see Charlie. For those of you who don’t know Charlie – he and I were the unfortunate ones who married the twin sisters that turned out to like girls more than guys. ‘Nuff said. Hope the traffic is better tomorrow, or I might just drive myself off into the ocean, never to be heard from again.
(was that a loud cheer I just heard?)
