Saturday May 26, 2007 Jacksonville, FL

From Jacksonville – NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!
There is no bump in the road at the So. Carolina/Georgia border! AND – evidently, Stuckeys (for those of you old enough to remember them) must be out of business because there were no signs for them ANYWHERE in my travels.
Stayed near Roanoke last night. Up & at ‘em by 6:15. 66 degrees – but it was really colder than that and got worse as I continued south. Got as low as 56, but a wonderful ride with very picturesque areas. You could still see the fog hanging over the hills and valleys with the cattle outside waiting for the sun to warm them up. Stopped in Charlotte and had breakfast with Fran Hook. She had a friend of Mikes in from DC and the three of us went to “Toast”, a wonderful little place that Fran has done some advertising for. It was warm and sunny and we ate outside. There was a wonderful “sweet” kind of an odor that Fran thought was cedar mulch, but it reminded me of bales of sugar cane. (Don’t ask me how I know). After we were done eating, I felt so relaxed; I was almost ready to fall asleep. I hadn’t felt that way since I started the trip. After 3 hrs, it was time to hit the road again. At least this part of the trip was almost all 70mph and there was very little traffic on the road to slow you down. I pushed a little harder today because I want to make Key West by tomorrow afternoon so another 600+ miles got done about 6:30 this evening. I remember when we were kids going to Fla in the winter, once we hit the border, it was “we made it!!”. We didn’t realized how much further we had to go. I thought about that as I crossed the border, and still said to myself – “I made it!!” I guess the more things change……..
The picture you see of me & Fran is one I took by just holding the camera with my outstretched hand and clicking. I know we’re both much better looking than that.
Tomorrow – off to the Keys. (and maybe find a Stuckeys)
